Jungle Galio?

Could this be a thing? He has decent aoe, a strong defense steroid, and his ganks could be very powerful even before he is lvl 6...

What would his drawbacks be? Am I over looking something? I did a search and I didnt really see a post about it, but then again reddits search sorta sucks. Most of the issues I've read seem to suggest that galio was nerfed pretty hard when MR runes took a hit.

Have any of you guys tried or seen it?

thanks

Galio is super super mana hungry. If they steal your blue at level 1, you lose.

His ganks are also really sub-par pre-6, since all he has is 1 slow that's actually somewhat hard to hit.

would his ability to get into position be any worse than Hecarim? because he does have gust.. but I suppose that would be still not as much damage probably

I feel like maokai, malphite, and alistar sorta feel hurt if they lose blue as well. Do you think galio would be in a worse position than they would be?

Levelling gust first would make clearing camps harder, because it costs more mana and does less damage than blast. Rank 1 of gust gives a 20% movement speed boost, and only in the line of the cast. Rank 1 of Hecarim's charge gives a 75% movement speed boost, as well as a knockback, and it's attached to him, meaning that he doesn't have to follow a set path in order to use the speed bost.

Alistar jungle is pretty terrible now, so I wouldn't use him regardless.

Maokai has much much greater mana efficiency than Galio does. Galio's Q is his most mana efficient spell, and at level 1 it does 80 damage for 60 mana. Maokai's E on the other hand, does 120 damage for 70 mana.

Malphite is likewise more mana efficient, as his E at level 1 does ~70 damage for 50 mana, and starting at level 2, his W passive gives splash damage for free.

On top of that, Maokai and Malphite both have innate sustain for free, either in the form of Maokai's heal or Malphite's shield, meaning that even if they do get invaded on, the slower jungle caused by lack of blue won't be as detrimental to their ability to actually do the jungle at all.

Another point I would add is that Galio is a very predictable champion. His skills are vastly known and it's difficult to surprise people. So even as a sleeper pick, I think other champions are better options.

Consider Trundle, people forget his pillar is a thing and then they get buttfucked by that filthy thing. Trundle is a strong counterpick to many of the popular AD-based junglers such as J4, lee sin, and xin zhao

The secret society of trundle players would like to have a word with you :-p

Yea, I wasnt really thinking about him as a sleeper, just as another possible option and if it was worth doing an actual investigation...

That is a very good clarification, thanks for the insight!

I was thinking gust might be a single point, but I suppose by then he would be level 3 at least, probably level 4. I suppose by then, might as well just use maokai or malphite, lol.

I actually did this a lot in season 2. Back then AOE clears were king. In season 3, now that they've buff the big minions even more, they've made his slow clears even slower.

He can still do it. Nothing like he could before and you are basically forced to be more of a support tank.

I was thinking perhaps like AS marks, Armor seals, MR/lvl glyphs, and perhaps mana regen quints? and like 0/21/9. Starting with like cloth pots? perhaps crystal flask, and getting an early back?

Got a suggestion for runes and masteries? how did you do it?

This is no longer good in S3. Was, in my opinion, incredibly strong in S2 to the point that I was playing it semi-competitively (in scrims with high-tier non-professional teams).

What I used was ASPD Marks, AP Quints, flat AP Blues, Armor yellows. 0/21/9 masteries.

He is not as blue-dependent as one would think. I have been invaded before (many times) and recovered fine.

His ganks are actually incredibly strong if you have your lane initiate. The base damage on Q with the rune set-up is quite impressive. Also, Galio's base AD is reasonably high (tied for 5th highest at level 1).

What's important to note when playing jungle Galio is that you MUST absolutely force objectives around 10 minutes unless you're incredibly behind, just like Morgana. Waiting for 20 minute plays is wasting your potential.

All in all, Galio is a strong jungler in an environment where your team can take advantage of what you bring. This is unlikely to happen unless you're playing with an arranged team. Galio jungle should not be picked so much for his jungle power as he is picked to flush out a strong team comp that can pressure objectives and win the mid game team fights.

Wow, thank you for the info!

What changes to s3 did you feel weakened his jungle? I get the feeling most people feel the move away from AoE style junglers weakened his position, but as you said he has high base AD so it seems like it shouldn't be to much of an issue to finish out the camps?

Mainly the S3 changes to help single target junglers weakened Galio's ability to clear at a reasonable speed. You will sacrifice jungle pressure to gain some teamfight presence. However, there are other junglers that can do that without sacrificing the jungle pressure such as Hecarim.

High AD is just a number out of many. His overall single target damage is not very good. It's not sound logic to assert high ad => reasonable clear time. Poppy has the same AD as Galio, for example. Her clear time is not reasonable at all. On the other hand, Elise has one of the best clear times this patch and she has one of the lowest AD values in the game.

Ah, very insightful again. Thanks!

I've done it before, his clear is horrible early, and the mana is just so awful. He goes oom with blue buff. Also, his base attack speed/animation is fucking horrible, so that hurts his clear even more.

did you feel like running AS runes would help? He looks like hes between Nautilus and Maokai for attack speed, and I tend to run AS marks on both, at least enough to get to about .75ish attack speed. (on mao, i cant remember where I end up with naut)

I am not sure there is a good way to patch the mana issues, so that might be a major issue.

My ap junle page has attack speed runes, can't say I've ever tried running mana runes on him so I can't say if there's a solution to that. I would always just rush chalice like normal, which helps.

His early levels would still probably be bad though.

Thanks for the feedback.
