Why is Wikipedia always asking for money?

Everytime I visit the website for the past 10 years, it's always the same thing over and over. "Oh we can't survive" or "A lot of people who use Wikipedia do not donate".

I mean how much does it cost to even host a website like that? How are they not funded already? They could make money with ads, it won't be the end of the world.
