Hatch won't open in cold weather - 2012 Mazda 3 hatchback

Whenever the temp drops below 45 degrees or so the button to open the hatch does not work. There is no key, nor is there a driver's side unlock thingee. Currently the only way I can access anything inside the trunk is to fold the seats down.

I've read others have had the same issue. One guy said he pointed a heat gun to the button that opens the trunk and that did the trick, so it's definitely a temperature issue.

My question is, is there an escape button inside the trunk? Or did they neglect to include that because if someone was trapped in the trunk they could just fold the seats down to escape?
