Has anyone installed DSM 7.2.1-69057 Update 3 and can verify this?

DSM

There was a post 2 months ago here suggesting that after this update Storage Manager will no longer display S.M.A.R.T. attributes and Western Digital Device Analytics (WDDA): https://www.reddit.com/r/synology/comments/16sct8h/storage_manager_will_no_longer_display_smart/

In the meantime, I see that wording in release notes has changed a bit:

"S.M.A.R.T. testing for M.2 NVMe SSDs is no longer supported." - so only for M.2 NVMe SSD, instead of for all drives including non-SSD drives. This, ironically, seems like a defeat after in relatively recent version 7.1.1-42962 Update 6 one of the changes was "Fixed an issue where the S.M.A.R.T. test results of NVMe SSDs could not be displayed."

"Adjusted the suggestions generated by Western Digital Device Analytics (WDDA)." - which is not exactly "removed support" as suggested in the previous post cited above, but very vague. This is also pretty interesting as

Did anyone install 7.2.1-69057 and can report if this functionality is really crippled in new version?

u/hyunjuan, any thoughts (and thanks for reporting this)?

Yes, the release notes aren't lying.

Yes smart attributes in gui is removed (don't have a nvme model so don't know about smart testing for nvme is available or not)

i never use the GUI as i have a custom script that logs all smart data to InfluxDB / Grafana every 12 hours

https://github.com/wallacebrf/synology\_SMART\_disk\_data\_logger

It also stopped working on the commandline, at least for my HDs.

I'm not too sure about your question but... I have that version of the OS on a DS920+.

I can see for a WD161KFGX

  1. the bad sector count,
  2. drive reconnection count,
  3. drive re-identification count
  4. Last test result summary (eg Healthy)
  5. Temperature Power on time

I can't see the WDDA tab for that disc, but I can, for example on a Seagate see the "IronWolf Health" tab.

So you can still run S.M.A.R.T. tests? But S.M.A.R.T. Attribute details button which lists all of them is gone?

The S.M.A.R.T. attribute I'd really be missing is Reallocated Event Count, this is how I found out my disk was failing, and I'm not happy to have to ssh into NAS just to find out this data.

After seeing your post, I took screen shots of all the tabs and then updated. And yes, I can no longer view the SMART Attributes. Everything else remains the same. For myself, I had never looked at those before. Now I'll have to dig into that.

Thank you.

It irks me quite a bit, because S.M.A.R.T. data basically helped me replace 6 WD REDs on warranty because I was able to print out S.M.A.R.T. data, and at the time, this was the NAS feature that proved to be essential. I don't know why they're hiding this data now, and I don't really want to hack my NAS to find this or pluck my drives out.

I'm not upgrading... at least as long as I'm forced to.

Oh my dear AutoModerator... yes, I found my answer, but my issue is far from solved. It will be solved if and when when Synology is able to display S.M.A.R.T. data again.

POSSIBLE COMMON QUESTION: A question you appear to be asking is whether your Synology NAS is compatible with specific equipment because its not listed in the "Synology Products Compatibility List".

While it is recommended by Synology that you use the products in this list, you are not required to do so. Not being listed on the compatibility list does not imply incompatibly. It only means that Synology has not tested that particular equipment with a specific segment of thier product line.

Caveat: However, it's important to note that if you are using a Synology XS+/XS Series or newer Enterprise-class products, you may receive system warnings if you use drives that are not on the compatible drive list. These warnings are based on a localized compatibility list that is pushed to the NAS from Synology via updates. If necessary, you can manually add alternate brand drives to the list to override the warnings. This may void support on certain Enterprise-class products that are meant to only be used with certain hardware listed in the "Synology Products Compatibility List". You should confirm directly with Synology support regarding these higher-end products.

I just installed it and now I can read ZERO SMART attributes on my WD40EFRX drives in a DS220j. Just before the update it was still working. I had the impression this is a rather minor "update".

I logged into it, and smartctl tells me about the device "SMART support is: Unavailable - device lacks SMART capability."

Was this a mistake or deliberate? Maybe it's time to ditch Synology then. It was nice while it lasted....

Weird. I have mostly Seagate drives and some WD's and I was seeing data from the cli. When I start running the command, I found that the sata listings (sata1/sata2 etc) are not in the order I would expect. So, one of my WD drives, which I expected to be sata7 turned out to be sata4. That said, when I ran the command, it did return the SMART data for the WD drive.

The DS220j can just have two drives, and smartctl -a lists also that the respective /dev/sda (and sdb) is in fact a WD40EFRX.

I talked with an IT friend who told me nowadays he would stay away from Synology anyway, too much corporate greed. I don't know, at some time this will backfire to the company. Too many bean counters have probably overtaken.

If this doesn't get reverted in some update soon, I will soon drop it on ebay and just roll my own NAS. I am well capable of doing that, I just thought Synology offers a nice all-integrated solution - not anymore it seems.

Probabbly related, but i just got two disks for cache and they simply did not appear at all!
