Regarding /u/hoopingdotorg

Hello all of you wonderful hoopers!
It has come to the attention of the mods that u/hoopingdotorg has continued to abuse r/hooping to the point of annoying users.

At first, u/hoopingdotorg was just plain abusive by blatantly blog-spamming r/hooping. Eventually, we reigned in the blog-spamming (they started to link directly to videos and external content) and I thought all would be good...

Unfortunately, I was wrong. I thought I liked the amount and general variety of content posted by u/hoopingdotorg, but they have completely overwhelmed r/hooping, to the frustration of many users.

So, from now on, I will be VERY selective about approving links from u/hoopingdotorg. I think it's reasonable to include an occasional link to original content created by Hooping.org (I have seen some useful and informative articles, that are Hooping.org original content.) Any of their other submissions (photo of the day, links to external articles, YouTube/Vimeo videos) will not be approved. Their other content will not be hard to find, as they continually flood Facebook and Google+ with posts.

Thanks!

Are you the person/persons responsible for the u/hoopingdotorg account? Please send either of the mods a private message, and perhaps we can have a dialog about how you can be a better member of this community.

This is good to hear. Thanks for taking action while at the same time not totally shutting them out of this group. Good work!

Thanks for listening to our concerns!

I liked when they were posting about the Hoopie Awards or whatever those were called.

This is exactly the sort of original content that I plan to approve and include as part of r/hooping. I just approved a nice article about taking fire and LED photographs...

Thanks everyone for your feedback!

Hey Carpart

First off, I wasn't aware of the issue of blog spamming on Reddit when I first joined. Once I became aware of it I started posting links directly to the content that appears on Hooping.org each day - so apologies for not knowing all of the rules around here when I first signed up.

That being said - I'm really confused as to what the problem here is. Prior to Hooping.org joining Reddit you, Carpart, were posting pretty much everything verbatim from the Hooping.org front page here yourself. So what exactly is the difference between you posting Hooping.org's content each day, and posting it ourselves? I've also noticed that since Hooping.org joined Reddit and began posting here that you haven't been posting much of anything in the Hooping subreddit at all - with the exception of a few items from Hooping.org that we missed posting here along the way. And given that you're apparently going to be moderating Hooping.org's posts now and only allowing some of them to be approved, does that mena that you are going to go back to pilfering and posting the remainder of what makes it to our front page? For someone to drop by Hooping.org and hijack our content to post it all to this subreddit is pretty tacky. Taking issue when we begin posting that same content for ourselves is pretty freakin' unbelievable.

Hooping.org spends hours every single day tracking down the best of the hooping web on top of creating our own original content. We've been the original source for all things hooping online for nearly a decade - long before Reddit even existed, not that you'll find a single reference to us in any of the recommended links in the Hooping subreddit. It makes me wonder what you have against hooping.org to begin with.

Responding as a user, I do like your content but its not why I come to this subreddit. We post videos of ourselves and critique, tutorials we found helpful, talk hoops, help each other with moves etc, but it's all user driven. It's a small community, and frankly posting 4,5,or6 posts a day just kind of clutters up the page, and it's not done in a personal way. You don't comment or take part in discussions, you just spam everything you posted on your website (which many of us already visit regularly or follow through other social media).

I'm glad the moderators could come up with a way to keep you included in our community without banning you because I do enjoy some of your content, but you're putting out so many links that you're drowning the community atmosphere. Even posts that get downvoted still hang out on the front page. Carpart and other users here post hooping related content we find on the web. I guess that sometimes involves your content (which I don't understand why you'd be mad at people directing webtraffic your way, it's a compliment that individual users want to share your content) but nobody floods the front page because that's bad etiquette. Bear in mind you're also the one profiting from any clicks that go your way.

Many of us enjoy your site, your content and some of your posts and I don't think you'll be losing any fans. I want the community to remain positive and personal. The type of attitude you showed in this post as well as your constant overly pervasive advertising without any type of interaction with the users besides pushing your links on us is neither.

That was an incredibly ungracious response. Definitely tainted my view of hooping.org just a bit. Defensiveness isn't the best way to rep your site.

Prior to Hooping.org joining Reddit you, Carpart, were posting pretty much everything verbatim from the Hooping.org front page here yourself. So what exactly is the difference between you posting Hooping.org's content each day, and posting it ourselves?

If you look at my history, you will see that I never posted your content prior to you joining this site and flooding it with your content yourself. Once you started flooding r/hooping with blog-spam, I started reposting direct links to the content you were linkjacking.

Blog-spam/linkjacking is specifically covered in the reddiquette.

I don't spend a lot of time posting content to this sub-reddit because I am merely helping my wife moderate the site - she is the hooper, I am the internet-nerd. That's why "[I] haven't been posting much of anything in the Hooping subreddit at all". The point of this community is user-generated content, not moderator-generated content.

Please read the reddiquette and decide if this is a social community you would like to participate with.

We have tried multiple times in the past to contact the u/hoopingdotorg account directly, to no avail - check the orangered envelope next to your username in the top right corner of the page. I have nothing at all against hooping.org... my actions are a direct result of feedback from other members of the community. This is the FIRST TIME I have heard anything from the person responsible for u/hoopingdotorg, despite previous attempts at direct contact.

I am grateful for, and appreciate the content that is generated by hoopingdotorg. It would seem that it is the other members of this sub-reddit that are put-off... I would reach out to them to find out "what the problem is".

The basic point is that you should not post every single item that you post on hooping.org to this subreddit. If you would like to pick the 1 or 2 best pieces of content from hooping.org to post here on a daily or weekly basis, I think the users would be fine with that. By reposting every single link from hooping.org here, you violate the rules of this site, and irritate the user community. We are only responding to user feedback that you have flooded r/hooping with all hooping.org content, as you can see from the other comments on this thread.

If you would like a link on the sidebar, then all you had to do is ask. Every link on that sidebar has been requested by a user of the community. We are happy to do the same for you.

As I said in the OP, if you would like to discuss the rules of the site or how you might better adhere to them, please feel free to send the mods (either myself or sassy_chassis) a private message. We are more than happy to work with you, we just need you to respond when we reach out to you.

I would never go on that website after reading this response.

Unfortunately, Reddit isn't a simple black and white online site. And it seems you may not fully understand it.

Not sure if you are aware, but you've been shadow-banned here on reddit for a long time. Meaning, the spam filters of any subreddit will automatically make your submissions be hidden. It isn't the r/hooping mods themselves that filter your posts; instead they are the ones that must go into the spam folder and allow your post to show.

That is the case with any post you make and also users aren't even allowed to look at your profile due to being a shadow-banned user.
