For anyone who has seen Star Citizen's latest aspirational "Garman Humble FPS bounty hunting" videos, and are considering the "pledge", don't. - This is what Star Citizen's actual FPS gameplay loop tends to looks like; Slow preparations for a fiddly, glitchy loot-hoarding hell.

Even backers will tell you not to pledge. It's free multiple times a year. Try it before you spend a dime.

So the box part was a funny bit the guy did..other parts are averagely laggy, since this is a beta version

Try the game yourself.

I have. I know what it's like to farm ERTs, run Black Kite, spend way too long clicking "Dismiss" to clear CS5 on Kareah with the comm-link up because the "Insert" option on it just wasn't there. I've done the "whatever mining station number 18" on MT's gold run, and the beryl options. I used to run bunkers. I've run a few lately. They still suck just as hard after 3 years. It's a game that does not and will not ever make progress beyond "occasionally good space dogfights". It's a grift.

I mean at worst it sounds like you had dozens of hours of fun before reaching that level of frustration.

In Star Citizen you start with an Aurora or a Mustang.

As a new player, you should expect those not to be fun. I did not expect to ever enjoy them.

The hours I spent were mostly looking for tolerable ways to reach something enjoyable.

You're definitely right about the new player experience. Learning the game often sucks. With a lot of practice, every wipe you could take your Mustang out and earn a top tier fighter within like 3 hours of grinding.

In a more finished game the starter ships should have more ways to make money and with much less bugs.

The game is very unfinished and they haven't even really focused on content yet. The mission designers and artists have been working on the single player.

A little late on this one, given the event that the video promoted is over. I definitely agree you shouldnt make purchasing decisions on CGI videos, but this post is misleading.

This is from 9 months ago on the most unstable patch the game ever had. Since then there has been better stability, completely overhauled FPS AI, new recoil mechanics, new time-to-kill changes, location updates, and official support for the boxes that guy glitched in (even though you don't need to bring one). The AI is still hit or miss depending on the server, but the PVP loop is 100x better and is some of the most fun I've had in a multiplayer game.

the PVP loop

Getting a bouty for a player in Grim Hex that never moves.

And the rare exception where you kill him by blowing up his ship with your ship, or you fail because he blew up you ship with his ship.

There's no FPS involved.

You can go to Ghost Hollow, any of the breaker yards, Jumptown (or any event really), SPK, and a bunch of other places to engage in organic PVP. There's also lots of orgs that host public events if you keep chat open. I've ran into maybe one bounty that was AFK at Grimhex. Also you can use distortion weapons to disable a ship instead of blowing it up, then you can board (shoot the door with ballistics) and have plenty of FPS gameplay.

The "overhauled FPS AI and mechanics" are vastly overblown, btw

They're not if you get into a good server, when the server FPS is low the AI will always suck, that's going to be the case until at least the replication layer comes in. On a server with a high framerate the AI are pretty fun to fight. They were overtuned for a while, but with the TTK, and spread changes I find they're not too overpowered.

I have never seen recorded evidence of the AI in Star Citizen being functional. There doesn't seem to be a single gameplay video on YouTube of a bunker mission without broken NPCs.

I have seen videos claiming they were working, where the AI rushes him, he runs out of ammo, the AI reaches him and doesn't know what to do, walks right past him on the stairs, turns around, and shoots him dead.

That was a "good" example of AI behavior by Star Citizen's standards, simply because it wasn't frozen in place or glitches through the floor or wall.

I don't watch SC YouTubers, so I cant comment on that one way or another. I will say I've had some very good experiences with them personally, especially on the recent PTU patch.
