Rant about tinkering vs plug and play

Discussion

To begin with, not here to disparage complete open source, or if you're more into the tinkering/hackery/maker mindset.

I'm just feeling ranty about discussions I've had here recently. I suspect this subreddit generally leans more into the tinkering side of the hobby. More Vorons here than not. I fully understand this, and that's where the hobby came from. But with any specialist hobby, as soon as it becomes more mainstream, while it does suck in some respects, you must understand most people aren't like that.

I personally have had a Prusa Mini about two years ago now. I did quite a lot of reading and watched reviews to settle on it. I wouldn't really describe myself as an overly technical person, although I would say I'm more technically minded than most people I've interacted with. I also feel I've had terrible luck with like, computers and such in the past and I tend to fixate on the negative anyways. The reason I wanted to get into 3D printing was simply to have access to video game and comic book props I couldn't really get otherwise, even if they were sold somewhere.

I wanted to spend most of my time creating my own 3D models or playing games, not troubleshooting or upgrading. I also am on navy pay (please don't thank me for my service, I feel I've not done anything worth thanking) so I certainly don't have a lot of spare income but I am at least comfortably off. I opted for the Mini Kit not out of a desire to know my printer but cause it was cheaper. I don't regret getting it, cause it did help me fix it the one or two times I NEEDED to, as well as upgrade it with a WiFi chip. But I'd much rather not fiddle. I want to print and relax.

Like I said, I get it if that's your speed, and I agree people SHOULD learn the basics. Also I agree that Bambu's fucky but at the end of the day, I would argue a LOT more people will get into printing to have cool shit, not for more functional uses or to tinker with it. Either their hobby is printing or their hobby is the 3D printers themselves. I also am completely pro-open source and upgrades and cross compatibility etc etc. I don't think most people would reasonably be against that. Even the most vehement Apple fan I've met isn't pro scummy practices. Although I've personally seen those that are, thank fuck, I've not actually met them.

As a final point, a lot of my coworkers see me with desk ornaments and talk about wanting a printer. None of them are technically minded, even if their job and training is more technical. Four out of five of them barely know how to navigate a computer, but if they're dead set on getting a printer, I'm not gonna actively discourage them; rather warn them and try to equip them with more knowledge on generally having a printer and let them make that decision for themselves.

Anyways, thoughts? Doubtless I'll get loads of replies ignoring all the caveats and pre-emptive statements but yknow, I do like a good debate
