Can't avoid the sniper

Doing Herbalist 9 with Arthur and was able to get feverfew using the buggy method, but as soon as I get close to Armadillo the sniper gets me through the buggy. I keep the camera up and to the right just as I'm supposed to, but the sniper has gotten me 3 times all in the same location.

I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. I'm thinking of trying the meat shield method but can't find a good walking route and can't figure out the camp situation.
