Revamping the Weapon Triangle with a Knockoff FE's help
The Legend of Korra: A New Era Begins for the Nintendo 3DS is a shovelware FE knockoff. Being a Korra fan and a FE fan, I wanted to try this game super badly just to see what monstrosity they concocted, but I only recently got around to it. What I found was watered-down FE gameplay, hilarious cutscenes, and something I didn't expect- a mechanic that was actually kind of cool and might help FE.
Here's how Shields work in TLOK: A New Era Begins. All units have between 1 and 3 shield points. While the game doesn't have traditional classes, it can be inferred that tankier classes will have more shield points assigned. If a unit is attacked, a shield point is automatically expended to nullify the attack. Once a unit runs out of shield points, they can be damaged normally. However, if a unit attacks with weapon triangle advantage (WTA), they bypass shield points and deal damage directly. Shield points don't regenerate either, so you have to extra be careful in managing your units, deciding when it's worth it to take a hit. Kind of like dual guard, in that way, but way more reliable and in the player's control.
This effectively makes the weapon triangle far more important than it would be otherwise, whether with the classic, 3H or Engage systems. It also makes armored units better, since 3 free hit nullifications is quite a lot to play around with. I even had a further idea for the amount of shield points remaining to be represented visually, with your armor breaking/dirtying as you lost shield points.
Now, you may ask, how do bows fit into this? Or magic? Would effective weaponry also remove shield points? Would all units get shield points, including mounted units? Wouldn't that be way too OP?
Don't know! I'm not a game dev. Sounds kinda cool though, yeah? Another possible method of resource management that doesn't feed into skill emblem.
