The only table I can use for building my PC that isn't on carpet has metal on it. How can I keep my components safe?

Build Help

I don't have a lot of places I can build my new rig on Friday. I own a huge ikea desk that would be perfect (just gotta keep the components off the metal grate on the back, lol), but it's in my bedroom with carpet and i don't think I can fit it through my door onto the hardwood. I have my old desk, but that thing is so busted I'm worried that my rig will snap it in half and send everything crashing to the floor.

That leaves the table in my dining room, but unfortunately, my mother--a person with truly awful, abysmal taste who I am very glad does not live here anymore--superglued two huge (very thin, though) plates of pure metal to it years ago for...some reason and getting them off and cleaning the table is basically a no go.

So, not sure what to do. I've heard that I can get a big sheet of cardboard and put it on the dining room table. Would that be enough to prevent any issue with the metal plates on the table? But I just realized I could also put the cardboard on the floor of my bedroom so I'm not standing on carpet, hah. That would certainly obviate carrying a like 40-pound rig down the hallway in terror!
