Question about a lot of similar pages and the use of canonical url

Hello!

This is how the layout of the pages are:

www.examplesite/\[country\]/\[city\]/\[event\]

So I have basically every country in the world, and every city imaginable.

So basically I have thousand, of thousand of pages (even excluding the event page)

So, in my mind every city or country page is its own page. Sure, its not very unique in content, but it shows events in that country or that city etc etc.

Is it reasonable to to have every page as canonical? Or is it a problem that every page is pretty much identical other than differences in the metadata and events?

If you want every page indexed, then they should have unique canonicals matching the URL. They are not technically duplicates nor should they be considered the same page so it would be wrong for them to cross canonical.

Whether each page is sufficinetly individual will be down to Google when you publish it but this is a standard Saved-Search directory play and its super effective.

And there are 100's of ways to make unique-ish cotent - like having boiler plate text with varaibles.

The problem is authority shaping and reach. These pages are unlikely to all get indexed and stay indexed - there are people who actually analyze what % of large director sites are indexed...

As long as you know you only need a % percentage and the rest will oscillate depending on whether they get traffic

Sites like indeed.com are awesome at this and full of clues and hints.
