1VD-FTV Fuel Efficiency Discussion

Hey guys,

I have a 2011 VDJ76r with the 1VD and my fuel efficiency is all over the place. If I use a tank of fuel around town and have an average speed of 50kmh (even start stopping) I end up with a fuel efficiency of 11.5-12.5 L/100kmh.

But if I am driving between population centres (say Mavkay to Townsville)with a speed of around 90-100kmh l get 12.5L/100km+. Sometimes as high as 14L/100kmh.

Can anyone explain this to me? I understand that around town I barely break 1500rpm (so high engine load/low RPM) and highway cruising is 2000rpm+. I thought that highway driving was supposed to be more efficient!!

not when your car is shaped like a brick

it's air resistance

Yeah, that makes complete sense!

Have you had your intake cleaned recently?

I'm not massively mechanically minded, can you explain what that means? Maybe with a video link to how it's done? Like the intake of what?

I can do an oil change, diff oil change, I installed a second battery and simple things like that haha.

I've never done it on a 1vd personally.

But if you YouTube it you will see the process.

I think yours being pre 2017 shouldn't have a dpf fitted which can cause significant issues in regards to intake blockages.

But I think worth looking into if you're chasing fuel efficiency.

I did have a look. It doesn't seem TOO complicated, but there can be electronic complications with the EGR after doing it, apparently.

I'm actually really happy with my fuel efficiency, I was just curious about the difference between town and highway driving.

Your year would have the older 5th gear so that doesn't help you but I have a 2022 VDJ76 and that's pretty much exactly the same as mine. Its brick like shape is just so inefficient it really penalises you at speed.

Well, that is actually really good to know!

Last 4 days drove Townsville to Sydney and was 13.1 1st tank and 13.5L/100km on the 2nd. Heavily loaded with family and gear with rooftop tent and big box full of pressies on the roof

That's pretty good for that kind of load! Christmas drive?

On the way back up to Townesville, hit me up when you reach Mackay, and we can go do some dune driving on the beaches here!?

It's a bit of a hidden gem spot!

Yeah family chrissie. Sounds awesome!
