Unsure what instrument I’m looking for

I played keyboard a little when I was younger and am keen to start learning again, but I’ve really no idea where to start. A lot of the options seem the same to me but I doubt they really are.

I want to learn to play but I also like the idea of messing around with sounds and arranging / being creative too, and maybe connected to laptop.

What’s the right instrument or equipment to do that? Is it a synthesiser? Any recommendations? My partner is also interested in this so don’t mind spending a bit if need be!
