I wrote a TMNT children’s book with ChatGPT for my 3.5 year old kid
I've been a TMNT fan since I was a kid, and now my 3.5-year-old is obsessed, especially with Leo. He's not into long stories yet and is a bit scared of "bad guys" from either TV or books.
At school, he's been playfully using brooms and toy shovels as katanas, sometimes accidentally bumping into other kids and his little brother. This inspired me to use ChatGPT to create a child-friendly TMNT book on how to play safe with your classmates and siblings (right, no bad guys!).
The final book isn't perfect, but my child loves it! We've been reading it together every night for a week now 😄 Here's the book for you to check out — link to Google Slides (Google Slides is the most handy tool to put everything together and share it lol).
Here's what I did:
- Outline Creation: Gave ChatGPT the outline for a 10-page story suitable for 3-5-year-olds, set in a preschool with Leo Jr. and Bebop Jr. ChatGPT helped with text and image descriptions (5 min).
- Story Revision: Worked with ChatGPT to fine-tune the story (10 min).
- Visual Generation: The longest part! Used image descriptions to create visuals for each page. The challenge was keeping character appearances consistent. Bebop Jr. looks different on every page 😅 (1-2 hours).
- Translation Addition: Added Chinese text to share the book with my nephew in China (extra time).

PS: I shared this earlier with other groups and was surprised to find that one of the most common reactions was the concern that AI art would replace jobs for real artists. I want to clarify that I am just an ordinary dad who is lucky enough to have access to modern technology to enrich the lives of my kids and myself.
