Coming off of trazodone
I’ve struggled with sleep my whole life. In middle and high school, my stepdad would take me to Waffle House in the middle of the night usually about once a week since he didn’t sleep either. When I was 18 or 19, I was prescribed trazodone to help me sleep, and it was like a miracle cure. Three years later, and I’ve gone up as much as I can, and I’m back to not sleeping well back in October or November. My psychiatrist recommended I start using melatonin with the trazodone, and I actually cut back the dosage and supplemented with melatonin. I’m not sleeping great, but I could stay asleep if I got to sleep, but getting there was a little tricky some nights.
I also have POTS, and I had an appointment with my autonomics specialist who is also a sleep doctor. He doesn’t recommend trazodone for people with POTS, and I’m willing to give something else a try since the trazodone isn’t working that well anyway. He gets me to start doxepin, and it’s been hell. Last night I laid down to sleep about 12:45, and by 4:30 I was awake. I laid there until 5 when I got up to do some laundry. I went back to bed about 7:30 and got maybe another two hours of sleep. Took the doxepin again tonight about 11:30, earnestly tried to go to sleep about 12:40, and since it had been 20 minutes and my eyes were wide open, I got up.
I’ve been referred to CBTI, but nobody has called yet. And it’s not necessarily racing thoughts that are keeping me up, I’m just not sleepy. Like I can feel that my body is tired, but I’m not sleepy. It’s like when you wake up in the morning. Like my body is still adjusting to being awake, but I’m not going to fall back asleep. Except I really should be wanting to fall asleep. I mean, I get the racing thoughts sometimes too, but those develop the longer I lay there. It’s not why I’m not sleeping in the first place. I’ve had a sleep study, and they said that everything was normal. Does anyone else experience insomnia like this?
