Writing product descriptions

I am trying to sell kitchen items through my site as well as through other ecommerce websites. However, product descriptions are taking time and I don't know what to write. Are product descriptions important or can I skip them? People will anyway look through images, so not sure if product descriptions are needed. Do you guys write them? If so, how much time do you take to write them? It will best if I can time box myself to write them. Any other suggestions will be very helpful. Can anyone please share your experience and guidance for this issue? Thanks!
