Computer Vision Problem Assistance.

I recently applied to a Data Scientist job and I received an assignment to complete in about 10 days. The assignment asks me to "create an algorithm to automatically mask" parts of an image. This is used to identify specific features of interest on the image. I do not have much experience with computer vision, but from my understanding, this is a instance segmentation type problem.

The issue is, the assignment does not offer me any kind of training data. It just has one example image. So I am confused as to whether or not they have made a mistake, or I am just completely wrong in my thinking about this.
