Air conditioning withered and died in strange way

The problem first started when the fans would refuse to blow anything but room-temperature air; neither hot, nor cold. This could be fixed by turning my car off for a while. Usually, the next day the AC would blow hot or cold as demanded. After a few weeks, the fans stopped turning on entirely, and its been months since I've been able to turn them on at all. No airflow is possible.

Car is a 2011 Mitsubishi RVR (same as outlander)
