Which Bayonetta game do you recommend?

I’m looking to purchase a game with a female protagonist, and Bayonetta has my attention. I’m entirely new to Bayonetta and don’t know anything. I’ve heard that Bayonetta 2 is the best overall.

Is there a story that progresses with each game? Should I start with Bayonetta 1?
