Me (23M) and gf (22F) 5 year relationship, her parents hate me. What are the best options?
My girlfriend and I have been together for five years and I’m lost on with my next step should be. She moved out of her parents at 21 and into an apartment a year ago (would’ve been together around 4 years at this point) when I suggested the point, she should stay home for another year or two and start to get more money for a future home. We were both still in college at this time. We lived at home and commuted to class every day.
She was headstrong on moving out and she did. Not too long after, she was just about breaking even every month, and I was practically forced to go live with her (told me she’ll break up with me if I didn’t move) in the apartment to split bills.
Last night I needed to vent telling her this is a dumb financial decision. This is just a waste of time and money. I’m still young I should be saving when I could be at home for free. All reasonable stuff and she then calls her parents for “backup” on any issue we have.
They then take her side, which makes sense and any parent would, but just the things they say about me just tears me apart.
“He’s such a disgusting human making you feel bad about your decisions… why are you still with him… he’s such a terrible person… be with a man and not a child who wants to live at home… We have no idea why you would love him…”
It’s been 5 years of her always resorting to her parents for any issue we have and she does it to make me look like shit in front of her parents to make herself feel better. I tell her we should talk things out we don’t need others involved in our business and after all it’s OUR relationship. I don’t see many couples resorting to their parents for all issues. Some things sure, but it’s for ALL issues that don’t even seem that bad.
Perfect example: a few days after Christmas I cleaned up our whole apartment. It was spotless. I decided to start to clean up the Christmas stuff like taking the tree down and decorations off. How I grew up, if we ever saw anything that can be picked and cleaned up, don’t ask just do it. With that mentality in mind I just did what felt normal. When she got home, she absolutely freaked out about the tree being down and immediately called her parents. Yet again, telling me how I’m an awful person and “what the hell is wrong with him” I should’ve waited longer “he’s going to ruin his kids Christmas” when all I had intentions to clean up a bit and I told them how I grew up but they didn’t want to hear it.
I’m not telling her to cut her parents out but there’s gotta be something we can figure out together. They absolutely hate my guts and it’s just making me not want to be with her. I love her to death but her parents think she deserves better and that I’m the worst person alive. Half of my things are packed up, this is serious. Not sure if anyone had anything similar to this kind of situation but I’m lost as to what my next steps should be.
