AITAH For wanting to go to my sister's ex wedding ?
8 years ago, my older sister broke up with her boyfriend at the time. I was 17, and I still remember it as the nastiest, most disrespectful breakup I've ever witnessed (not that I've witnessed a lot of them), especially because she made it VERY public.
My sister was in a relationship with him for 4 years, and at the same time she would also have sex with other (rich) guys for money. She used to say she was staying with him because he was a nice guy and she didn't want to break his heart, but I think she was staying with him because it was comfortable, and she could use him.
He treated her extremely well, he didn't have much money but when he did he would spend it all on satisfying her selfish desires (buying the new iphone, paying for her hair, nails, etc...). He was a genuinely nice person, he still is. All the family loved him, which is why when he suggested one day that he wanted to marry her, NONE of us were happy about it, because of her character.
So, one day, my sister decided she was getting married (she had met a rich politician in our country), but not with him. She told the family that the breakup was mutual and that everything was fine. That was a lie. In fact, he had traveled to another city to visit his sick mother, and she got married behind his back.
Another detail that I didn't know at the time is that she was pregnant with his child, and had an abortion so she could marry her rich politician.
He learned about it on Facebook, and came back to our family house, crying, begging, and confused. My sister was already living with her new husband, and we didn't know what to do. So my mom called her and ordered her to come and talk to him, to end things the right way. So she came.
And she threw unclean, smelly water on him to make him go away. She insulted him in front of all the neighborhood. This is in Africa, and of course, people were laughing at him, pointing fingers... they were entertained. After telling him how stupid and useless he was, and how he was too poor to be with her, she got back to her new life.
He was so sad that my mom wouldn't let him drive to get back home. So he stayed for the night, took a bath and the next morning we called a taxi to bring him home. I was heartbroken for him because I'd always loved him like a brother. But on the other side, I was actually relieved, because even if I never really said it, I could see that he was too good for my sister.
He helped me get in the university I wanted, and was always there no matter what. Not a single person in our family was okay with this (except some elders because of the dowry they were receiving from that rich guy).
Over the years, we would talk occasionally on social media, just checking up on each other. 3 weeks ago. I got a message from him:
"Hey, how are you? I understand that all of you took your distance because of what happened with your sister, but I am getting married in 5 months, and I would really appreciate it if you could come. We are not enemies, are we ? Please let me know if you would be interested in coming, I really want to have you there. You guys were my only family for years, besides my mom. And I only have love for you"
I was sooooo happy about that. Incredibly happy that he'd found happiness. I told him I would be there. I am living and studying in Europe now, and he even proposed to pay for my flight, so I could attend his wedding! (As I said, a really nice person)
Yesterday, my sister called me to forbid me to go to the wedding. She was yelling, crying... I was really confused, and I asked why, she said he had been abusive to her during their relationship (she talked about r*pe and other really disturbing things, and told the same story to other members of the family), that she never said anything because we all loved him so much and she didn't want to cause any drama...
I don't believe her. I know that now, he has a very good situation, from what I've heard, he is even more successful than the man SHE CHOSE to marry who sleeps around with teenagers and has zero respect for her.
I made it very clear, that I was going to the wedding. But I still get a lot of criticism from other family members about me being unsupportive. African families are just like that. "If your sister is not okay with you going, it should be enough for you not to go, because family comes first", they say.
I know my sister, and I still remember the day she admitted very calmly how she had an abortion without him knowing because: "poor people should not have children". She is not the victim, never was. Today, she is extremely miserable in her marriage and she can't get pregnant(which is a huge deal in Africa). She can't stand to see him happy, with a woman who took him when she only saw him as useless. She has no problem lying and inventing stories that never happened. I do understand the importance of being loyal to her first, but I have no valid reason not to go to the wedding.
So, AITAH ?
