How do you guys stack gain pedals?

Are you just putting your tube amp on the clean channel and cranking the gain on it? Then have one pedal for some crunch and then another for solos? Are the pedals set at 50% gain? I'm curious how you guys change from clean to overdriven to solo gain levels in a live setting. Thanks!
