Does this make sense? (Season 4 spoilers...)

SpoilerSeason 4

Does it make sense that Goldilocks would actually "change the world" all that much, like everyone kept saying? We know it has 70k+ tons of Iridium, which which is of course a ton compared to the amount of Iridium available on Earth, but in looking at the uses of Iridium, I don't see anything that's necessarily world-changing if the available quantities suddenly went through the roof.

En.wikipedia.con/wiki/Iridium

Sure, if you take that quantity of Iridium and multiply it by the current price of Iridium, you get a stupid number ($20 trillion according to the show), but the very fact that supply is increasing by such a massive margin is going to cause the price to plummet.

Hell the entire world mined 9 tons of Iridium in all of 2020, and we're suddenly introducing a source of 70k+ tons? It's hard to fathom that demand would even be able to ramp up enough to use even a fraction of that. And it's not like there's an interstellar marketplace they can sell it to, so once the Earth's demand for Iridium is sated, the excess availability is just going to drive prices way, way down.

Unless I'm missing something, it would have been a lot more sensible to not focus on a single element, and just say that the asteroid had a more general mix of rare elements which could benefit tons of different areas of industry and science.
