Was anyone else disappointed by the portrayal of the angels?

Discussion

"Angels" plural, mind you, not the spider in the kinky boots. But yes, there is a phenomenon that seems to happen in a lot of fandoms, where people get attached to a particular piece of fanon, to the point that they assume it's canon, and then they get upset when it turns out not to be, just because it's different from what they imagined. And that might well be what's happening here. Even so, I personally feel that the fanon angels would have been better.

After the pilot, probably because of their abstract appearance, lack of dialogue, and less than a minute of screen time, most fans assumed that the angels were meant to be these terrifying, eldritch things, incapable of human emotion and laser-focused on their mission. Come the actual show, though, and it turns out they're really just smug, crass, self-centered jerks, and to me, at least, that's a bit of a waste. These are supposed to be the ultimate villains; while Valentino, Sir Pentious and the like have more personal grudges against the heroes, the angels are horrific mass-murderers that everyone is afraid of, and the reason Charlie is trying to change things in the first place. So why are we encouraged not to take them seriously? Especially since it's nothing we haven't seen before - I don't see much difference between Adam and Mammon, or Katie, or Crimson, or any of the other demon villains we've seen in the setting so far. Wouldn't it be more interesting, and make more sense, if hell and heaven were different kinds of evil? Hell as the petty, arrogant, misogynistic jerks that Charlie has to deal with on a day-to-day basis, and heaven as the cold, uncaring bureaucracy looming over everything. In my opinion, Adam would have made a much more menacing impression if he had been very polite and formal while telling Charlie she was an idiot and also he was moving the date of the extermination forward.

Of course, all of that is just how I see it, and, to be clear, it didn't ruin the show for me or anything. I just hope the angels as a whole get some more interesting characterization going forward.
