r/coheed's Song Of The Day #12: Cuts Marked In The March Of Men
Cuts Marked In The March Of Men, one of the most underrated songs on the In Keeping Secrets Album; maybe in the entire catalog. I would surmise that's because it follows In Keeping Secrets Of Silent Earth: 3.
The Fiction: The battle has begun between the URA and the rebellion, who are both fighting furiously. Many are killed or wounded and, amidst the battle, Chase is captured by the URA. In an attempt to gain the affections of Jesse, Sizer gives himself up in exchange for Chase’s release. The URA agrees to the deal and Sizer is taken away to Shylos Ten, a quiet planet where the URA performs its brutal interrogations. (Credit to songmeanings.net)
The Real: I am having a bit of trouble...as usual. These early songs are so story heavy and cryptic compared to later albums. My stab at it involves the idea that this song is probably about the band getting ready to play a show. Perhaps Claudio wrote this song to re-energize for upcoming live shows? The "Tonight, We Storm" clues me into that. Or maybe this song is about hoping to find more success. "Deliver a favor to my love", 'my love' being the band itself, a 'favor' being success and recognition? Another clue to that being "I'll make peace when this is done", as in he's going to work tirelessly until their band is no more, and only then will he 'make peace' with where his life is. The chorus is tricky, but I think it reinforces these ideas. Chase is probably a representation of fame and musical success. Chase is 'loved in dreams' and it's 'here among the others', meaning he/the band have a shot at making it. The middle of the chorus seems to be a question posed to himself: if no one likes what I create, what's the point(then why should I spend any more time in a world that's gonna end pretty soon)? Sorry for the stream of consciousness, but meh, I think I could be on to something. Or not. I want your thoughts on this one, folks.
The Part: The backing guitar during the last chorus is incredible. The whole song builds up to that for me and every time, it's a release to hear it. The chorus itself is an awesome sing-along as well. Lots of emotion here, especially in the "Chase it's you I want" line.
