Handing out judgment tokens?

I'm playing my first game of votann today, and wanted a clarification on the rules with judgment tokens,

If the units that a character is leading get killed, does that mean that I am able to hand out a judgement token to the opponents unit that killed them gets a token? or because the character is part of that unit, it doesn't kill it?

any other advice for playing votann would be much appreciated
