Curiosity

So I’m sure it’s been asked/discussed and I just didn’t spend enough time looking for it…but with the acceleration the crew achieved trying to reach mars just before being knocked off course….were they sent into an elliptical trajectory and ended up back at earth the math is beyond me but like 3,000 years later and that’s why the earth pictured went from a desert shit show to a green oasis?
