[1891] The Beggarmen's Feast
Hi, I'm new to this community, but I would appreciate some feedback on a novel I'm trying to write called The Beggarmen's Feast. This is an excerpt from the first chapter, which begins with the opening of the story and ends at a point of particular significance to the story. I'd be grateful for any criticism and critique, especially on the characters, dialogue, and pacing.
The book itself will be an ensemble cast novel set in 1858, focusing on the crew of an American whaler called the Libertorum. This first chapter serves to introduce the captain, his wife, and the ship's officers.
Short blurb of the novel:
!Due to the slow decline of the American whaling industry in the Arctic grounds, the crew of one whaler decides to turn to piracy. As they navigate the frigid waters in search of ships to plunder, they find better prey to hunt amongst their own crew.!<
