How can I keep stuff from falling between my couch cushions?

I have a couch that can be electrically reclined.

The cushions cannot be removed.

I’ve attempted to put all varieties of covers over it to keep things from falling in between or through it, but frankly I just couldn’t keep up with the constant need to remove, launder, and replace them so frequently (not to mention that they slid all over the place — tried PLENTY of hacks to fix that as well, to to no avail).

Anything that falls in between or around the edges of the cushions (keys, phones, chargers, food, my hopes and dreams, remotes, wallets, etc.) will fall into typically one of three places:

  1. Straight through the couch and onto the floor beneath

  2. Into some random “pocket” of sorts within the couch that is difficult to find or access just by blindly reaching and feeling alone

  3. Into the void, never to be seen or heard from again

In the first case scenario, it’s SUPER difficult to actually get under the couch. It’s stupidly heavy and difficult to move, and there are metal bars just underneath it that run the perimeter of the entire couch, making it difficult to actually reach your hand under to grab something.

As it is now, if something falls through the couch and onto the floor, the only option to get it (aside from having two people struggle to move the entire thing) is to recline all of the seats, get down on hands and knees, and use one of those “claw” thingers (like, the ones older people and/or people with bad knees use to pick stuff off the ground with) to finagle it out.

If something falls somewhere within the couch, the ease of getting it back varies greatly depending on where it slipped off to.

If it was near the front sides, it’s usually as simple as reaching your hand in and grabbing it.

If it was in the middle center, well, now it’s on the floor.

If it was anywhere else, it’s somewhere within multiple layers of fabric and layers within the couch, which means sliding your arm into the couch nearly up to your pits and playing “where does this unseen couch tunnel lead?”

Again, since the cushions are not removable, it makes the search and rescue of valuables and so forth that much more difficult.

If there weren’t the metal bars in the way, I’ve considered placing a tray under the couch that could be slid in and out to catch and retrieve items more easily, but as it is, there’s no physical space available to actually do that.

I’ve tried placing those long foam cylinder thingers into the couch crevices, both to try and hold covers in place (lol nope), as well as alone to try and block the item’s path, but no luck there.

I really like the idea of something potentially being placed there to block the way though…

In the front seats of my car, we put in these little blocker wedge things between the seat and the center console (with a cutout area for the belt buckle to go through), and it has worked amazingly to prevent phones, chargers, receipts, trash, etc. from sliding between or under the seats.

If I could somehow do that same thing with my couch, I’d be set!

So does anyone else struggle with (or have struggled with) anything similar to this?

What might you suggest I do?

(other than defenestrating the abomination or lighting it aflame, of course)
