Question about transferring

I am a D1 athlete and I am considering transferring to another D1 school, do I need to apply to schools before I would enter the transfer portal (I’m a track athlete, so my season ends at the end of the school year), or would that be covered by me signing with a team? (so I would be enrolled in the fall 2024 without needing to apply to be a transfer for fall 2024)
