What’s up with people not using mics?

I’m an avid BF4 player but it seems consistent across all BF games. I can literally see while playing BF4 about 15 people will usually have mics plugged in yet not a soul speaks. I get sometimes you just wanna play but it almost seems like people see it as some forbidden activity.
