Rough Draft CP.1 : In my New York penthouse, I sat on my balcony, the morning sun casting a warm glow over the city skyline. With a steaming cup of rich, dark coffee in hand, I sorted through the day's mail scattered across the coffee table. Amongst the array of bills and glossy magazines, a thick envelope stood out, its weight substantial in my hands. What caught my attention even more was the name written on the front: Alexander Blackwood. It had been decades since anyone had addressed me by that name. With a swift rip, I tore open the envelope, revealing a letter stamped with the insignia of some fancy law firm. Clearing my throat, I began to read. "Dear Mr. Blackwood, It is with great regret that we inform you of the passing of your grandmother, Mrs. Evelyn Blackwood." My jaw tightened at the mention of her name, emotions long buried rising to the surface. "As the executor of her estate, it falls upon us to request your presence in Blackwood manor at your earliest convenience to settle her affairs." I pondered the implications of the word "affairs," knowing there was more to it than met the eye. "Please find enclosed further details regarding the reading of the will and other pertinent matters." I tossed the letter aside, the weight of its contents heavy on my shoulders. Memories of the past flooded back, memories of rejection and betrayal at the hands of the Blackwood family. They had turned their backs on my mother and me when we needed them most, casting us out onto the streets without a second thought. Since that day, I had harbored a deep-seated hatred for the Blackwood name, refusing to be associated with them in any way. Yet here I was, being summoned back to Blackwood manor, back to the heart of everything I despised. With a determined sigh, I set down my coffee and rose from my seat on the balcony. It was time to face my past head-on, to confront the demons that still haunted me. I descended the stairs to the lobby area where Brody, the doorman, stood waiting. His friendly smile lit up as he noticed my approach. "Good morning, Mr. McCarthy, shall I fetch a driver for you?" he asked, his tone teasing. "Hey, Brody, you don't have to call me McCarthy. Just Alex is fine," I replied with a grin. Brody's smile widened. "Alright, Alex, but you know I like to keep things professional," he said, still lighthearted. "Fair enough, Brody. But I'm good today, I'll let my car stretch its legs," I said. Brody nodded, his grin widening. "Ah, giving her some exercise, I see. Just don't let her outrun you!" Pretending to be offended, I placed a hand over my heart dramatically. "Hey now, she knows who's boss." With that, my sleek Aston Martin Vantage pulled up in front of the lobby, its engine purring with power. With a swift movement, I slid into the driver's seat. As I revved the engine, Brody leaned in, playfully tapping the hood of the car. "You take care out there, Alex. Don't let those mean streets of New York City get the best of you." I nodded, a grin plastered on my face. "Thanks, Brody. I'll make sure to come back in one piece." With a wave, I sped away. As I navigated the bustling streets of New York City, my phone rang, interrupting the solitude of the car. Glancing at the screen, I saw it was Sarah. I hesitated for a moment before answering. "Hey, Sarah," I greeted "Alex, where are you? I thought we were meeting for dinner tonight," she exclaimed, her voice tinged with disappointment. I sighed, feeling a pang of guilt. "Sorry, Sarah, something's come up. I can't make it tonight," I replied, trying to sound as sincere as possible. "What? Again? All you do is work, Alex! It's like I'm not even a priority to you anymore," she screamed, her frustration boiling over. I winced at her words, feeling the weight of her accusations. "Sarah, it's not like that, I just have a lot on my plate right now," I protested, but my words fell on deaf ears. "Do you even want to be with me, Alex? Are you seeing someone else?" she questioned, her voice trembling with insecurity. I felt a surge of annoyance rise within me. "Of course not, Sarah! How could you even think that?" I snapped, the frustration evident in my tone. But Sarah wasn't appeased. "I don't know what to believe anymore, Alex. I need more than just empty promises." With a heavy heart and a growing sense of irritation, I took a deep breath to compose myself. "Look, Sarah, I'll call you later, okay? We'll talk about this when we're both calmer," I stated firmly, irritation evident in my voice as I ended the call. With a sigh, I turned my phone onto "do not disturb," knowing that any further attempts to reach me would only lead to more frustration. With that, I set off, the distant skyline of Willowbrook fading into the horizon behind me. Despite the turmoil brewing within me, I knew one thing for certain—I had to confront my past and put this chapter of my life behind me once and for all.
