Confused Parent of High School Player
Looking for advice.
I don't know if this is the right place for my questions, but...
My son decided to try out for his high school baseball team last year. As a freshman who'd never played, I tried to temper his expectations while encouraging him to try. Happy surprise, he made the team! The coaches were clear that he wouldn't get much playing time but they were encouraged by his quick improvement in practices leading up to tryouts and his attitude and wanted to give him a chance. He practiced, he cheered on his team from the dugout, and he improved. During the off-season, we sent him for private lessons and he made the team again under a new coach. All seemed to be going well. However, now that this season has started, the new coach isn't even letting him practice! Today, he got one at-bat and didn't get to any field time during the intra-team scrimmage. There are several players on the team who never played before high school and the coach seems to think (he actually said this) that he expected that all his players were coming to the team having played the game and that he isn't there to teach them how to do it. I don't expect my son to be in the starting line-up, and I don't expect him to play in every game, but I feel like this man is killing my son's enthusiasm for the sport. I don't want to let J*** quit the team but I'm not sure I'm doing him any favors by making him stay on a team where he isn't even allowed to practice. How would you approach a coach about this? Should I say anything at all or would I just be perceived as "that mom"?
