Racial segregation on the campus

To fellow students, staff and all other constituents of the University of Auckland,

I am creating this post to shine light on an a issue that is deeply concerning for me. As of Wednesday, the 27th day of March 2024, this issue stands.

It came to my attention there exists an area designated only to be used by Māori and Pasifika students, located at the Business School of the university. I found myself perplexed at the signage, which openly supports racial discrimination, standing erect on the campus grounds of an institution that I once thought valued and respected all individuals, treating all as equals regardless of their backgrounds. Such blatant segregation of races so openly displayed simply astonished me. I hope you can all understand my perspective on why this is so wrong. It is to my opinion that the creation of this designated area beared no malice, intending only to show support for Māori and Pasifika students at Tāmaki Makaurau.

However, in our modern, multi-cultural society that is Aotearoa, racial segregation, regardless of intent or desired outcome, is simply unacceptable. There is a plethora of other ways to show support for the different cultures, and racial segregation is simply not acceptable. Do join me in raising awareness on this matter, and let's strive to create a more cohesive and welcoming environment for individuals of all cultural backgrounds!
