First gun?

Thinking about getting vp9 or p30 as first gun.. leaning more towards vp9.. but all the stores near me charging around $1000 after tax. Is that normal?! Because I have a friend who says he got his vp9 brand new a few years ago for like $600. Has the price gone up? Or is he lying lol
