Let’s talk mental and emotional health

I was asked a while ago to discuss this topic, and it’s something I’ve wrestled with how to address. I’ll apologize in advance if my thoughts drift a bit. I haven’t drafted this one out like I normally do.

This one’s mostly for the fans, especially the ones who cherish a creator who provides a genuine experience. Creators, feel free to chime in with your own thoughts.

I recently read a now-deleted post in one of the advice communities. A creator was asking the best way to communicate with a fan who was exhibiting symptoms of severe depression of the most dire variety. There are dozens of similar posts, sadly.

The creator was struggling with what to do, and it was obvious she cared, which caused further distress from her being ill-equipped to deal with such a situation.

I think it’s important to remember that time between a fan and creator is meant to be a fantasy. No matter how genuine, authentic, and friendly either party is, the relationship is based on that fantasy.

Nothing wrecks a good fantasy like bringing into it too much reality.

Ever watch a movie with someone who likes to nitpick over details? It sucks all the fun out of the experience.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with framing a conversation within reality, but there’s a fine line between, “I’ve had a rough day and want to take my mind off of it,” and diving into a deep discussion of all of life’s problems and burdens.

Real problems should be addressed by someone equipped to assist in solving them. Sure, it feels good to just get some things out there, but when you unburden yourself you’re asking someone else to carry that burden for you. That’s not fair.

It’s a struggle with which I have a great deal of familiarity. I’d wager it’s very common. I know it’s especially hard to hold back when you’re talking with someone who tells you that it’s ok to talk about anything. To those creators who’ve told me that, I appreciate it. But, I don’t want you to have to unpack all my nonsense on top of the nonsense you’re already dealing with.

Fans and creators alike: life is already a tough game, and I know some of us are playing with the difficulty level set to high. Know where to find resources to help you.

Fans, your favorite creator isn’t the resource for that. Instead, let them give you that temporary escape into the land of fantasy. Have fun, relax, and enjoy a virtual vacation. Send a nice tip for being supportive and helping you break away for a bit.

Don’t become the fan in those dozens of posts, causing your favorite creator to be in distress over how to help you.
