Would it have been better for Horcruxes to be an invention of Voldemort?

SpoilerQuestion

I know I'm treading on sensitive ground suggesting a change to the series, but wouldn't it have been cooler if this unspeakable, mysterious method of immortality that Voldemort used to make himself invincible was something he created himself? Something that Dumbledore has to spend the entire series figuring out because no one knew the splitting of the soul was even possible, and had to bring Harry in to his investigations because of Harry's unique connection to Voldemort, since by himself he wouldn't be able to discover what Voldemort had even done? We know it was difficult for Dumbledore to piece things together in the story as is, but right from Chamber of Secrets onwards it seems he knew that Voldemort made at least 1 Horcrux. Imagine if he had no idea how Riddle had preserved himself in the Diary? If during Goblet of Fire and Order Harry notices Dumbledore is increasingly absent from the school, and starts trying to pry around to figure out why? I think it would have added a lot of mystique around Voldemort to have been the creator rather than just a pioneer of Horcruxes, and it would also have made him seem like a bigger, unstoppable threat. How great does a wizard have to be for even Dumbledore himself to not understand his magic?
