The ending for Mags with the perspective of the Noclip documentary.
(Sorry for any spelling problems, but i invoke my esl-privelage)
Pentiment is one of my favourite games of all time, but one of the things i was dissapointed by was the ending for Mags. In the third act, much of the games dialogue is about what Mags will do in the future, and the two sides are (roughly): that Mags will stay in tassing and live out her life there and the second one is that Mags will leave tassing to probably join Esther in Prague. At that point i thought there would be a choice in the end to either leave or to stay. I fell in love with Tassing during the course of the game, and my choice would have been that Mags should stay and live a calm and happy life. I wasen't necesarily dissapointed in the ending or the lack of a choice, i was primed by Andreas running into the fire. But now the documentary came out and in the end Josh Sawyer talked about the ending and the original choice to not let you marry Ötz. Josh said that Ötz is a asshole and a terrible person "and why should you marry him", but when people told him that they actually wanted to marry him. The choice of telling Ötz to come to Prague in the end was dissapointing, not because it felt like cop-out (like it was) but it felt like a choice to choose another character "over" Ötz, in this case Esther. I was dissapointed in Esthers character and her parents during the entire game. They werent maybe a big part of the story, but they still got more time then many characters. I felt that they were underbaked characters even when you look at the little screentime they got. Much of the characters have some character traits and parts of their characters that made them feel colourfull (something that was mentioned in the documentary). If i were to summarize all of their characters it would be: they are nice people and they are Jewish. It felt sad to see that the only openly jewish side characters were that underbaked. It made them feel like they were in someway different from all of the other characters because they lacked that little bit of cahracter nuance. It felt like the choice to go to Prague was at the same time as a choice to live with Esther in Prague, or to get married with Ötz and live with him in Tassing. If we trust Joshs judgement and conclude that Ötz is a asshole it felt still to me that would have been the better choice because Ötz is a developed character and he has a personality. I will of course feel more for a asshole then a simple salted cracker. I also think that they made Ötz a more sympathetic character then just being a "asshole". And you could probably say the same thing about comparing Tassing to Prague, even with the in my opinion shallow reason for Mags to leave Tassing because the death of her Dad or to make more money in printing, i still feel the same way. In the story Prague is underdeveloped and Tassing is a beautifully developed village. The ending was dissapointing, and even if you liked Esther or any of the reason for her to leave i hope you can agree that a choice would been better. The fire in the monestary was locical because it mattered to the the story, but efter Esther leaves there is no story. There is only our own imagination and own thoughts, so why not let us have the choice. Sorry for this long post, i just have to rant (and with a hope in my soul that some relly nice person will make a alt-ending mod lol).
