Monitor works for a split second, then dark

Hey fixit,

My monitor recently crapped out on me. The screen will work for 1 second after being plugged in and then flickers to dark. The menu buttons (which should work regardless of connection status) do not work. No menus are displayed once it goes black. The flicker has an audible sound sometimes. The flicker occurs whether it was unplugged or if the power button was turned off/on.

The monitor is a Gateway FHX2300 bmid. It was manufactured in May 2009. My other monitor is working just fine.

Any ideas on what's wrong? I'm wondering if I can fix this or if I need to trash it.
