Overwinter questions

We just opened our hive for the first time since November. I originally thought that they had done better through winter, due to the activity I was seeing on warmer days. This was our first winter with our bees. We have about 2-3 deep frames of bees in our hive. I expected to see more. What is a normal amount to see after winter?
