How do I get my rattie to chew on his sticks?

I got my buddy Philoctetes some chew sticks but they're bland so I don't think he likes them. Is there something I can do to make them a little more appealing to chew on? I was thinking of maybe a light coating of honey or syrup or something, would that be fine?
