How intimidated should I be by Competitive Magic?

I want to get into competitive playing but have been casual my entire playing time. I know nothing about competitive etiquette, and my grasp of the rules is appropriately casual. How can I become more prepared for the environment? If you're a good player with good game etiquette (graceful loser, humble winner) and responsive to critique, should I be so concerned?
