About to get a cheap hair cut, any tips to make it come out well?

Long story short, i'm sick of spending 80-100 on my hair cuts and not being any happier than my 20 dollar cuts.

I have short hair and usually go pretty messy, and I was wondering if there are any style/requests you guys might suggest?

Edit: Thank you all for coming in and commenting, the haircut went pretty well and I'm as satisfied as I have been with my recent expensive experiences (not that I won't be going back to more expensive ones, it was just a nice change of pace)
