My early game is shit, what are some resources that will help me get better?

Usually I lose all control over any lane I am in, it doesn't matter which hero or match-up I play. I will die about 3 times on average in the laning phase and can't come back from it. It seems whomever I am up against gets a good enough of a snowball from the laning phase that it is hard to comeback late game unless my carry is good. I don't understand the strategy early game. If I'm aggressive I die and if I'm passive they push my tower over. At least when I'm aggressive I get SOME farm (or as support some attacks in on them). When I play passive I only really get XP from the creep wave getting killed on its way to the tower since if I try to farm the tower kills the creeps faster than my ability to predict when to last hit. I just don't understand the early game. Most of my strategies don't seem to work when other players seem to be doing it just fine and it is super frustrating. Early game mechanics just don't make sense.
