New to the game...what should I be doing?

So far I've done a little grinding on the default Excalibur and I know a little about how the game works, I'm just wondering if I'm missing anything, like: Should I try and get a different character? What weps should I be trying to get? What do I spend my 50 platinum on? Any help would be much appreciated, thanks
