sword and shield question

I have been using sword and shield as my main weapon throughout low rank and I just entered high rank and a lot of people are telling me that sword and shield is terrible for anything over low rank because damage out put is to low for some of the monsters is this true? could I stick with sword and shield or should I switch to different weapon
