When/why did we turn to modern medicines almost exclusively from using plants/herbs?

If I'm not mistaken, that's how we helped ourselves get over colds and fix broken bones, etc once upon a time. Obviously we advanced our knowledge to ibuprofen and other handy little pills but why did we, in general, stop using the plants around us? Follow up question: Why do doctors, Health Canada and others advise against alternative medicines?
