Can a wireless adapter be too energy demanding?

I have an Alfa adapter and was googleling "alfa wireless raspberry pi".

I found this quote in a forum: "I hope you try using that Wifi Adapter together with an active USB Hub? This Adapter is one of these high Power WarDriving Wifi Adapters (i own an old Alfa from there very first badge) and i think it will need much more Power from the USB Port than the Pi can handle."

Could this be true? Would the Alfa adapter just not work or would it actually damage the pi in some way?
