code consistency, auto formatters and git

hello all, i have a question that i don't dare asking elsewhere:

to make a codebase more consistent but avoid wrecking all the diffs, would it make sense to do the following: copy a repo commit wise, keeping the commit messages, but autoformatting each commit so you would end up with a new repo which has consistent formatting?

are there tools to do that?
