Having some weird problems with xbox live.

I logged onto Xbox.com today to check messages but when I logged on all my friends were gone as well as my messages. I have 80+ friends and a lot of messages since I never delete them. I then tried to get onto my actual xbox and I couldn't connect. When I test connection it says I'm able to connect though. So I then called xbox but they hung up on. Then it just randomly started working again. All my friends reappeared and I could connect. I tried to log on a couple hours later and I'm now having the same issues. Anyone know what would cause this and what I can to do to fix it?
